WR Roddy White: ATL Agrees to Extension With WR by Adam Caplan of ScoutNFLNetwork.com, August 8, 2009 at 9:15pm ET
Roddy White Profile
The Atlanta Falcons have agreed to terms on an extension with starting WR
Roddy White, the team announced Saturday. Details of the contract weren't
immediately known, but several reports stated that
White's six-year extension makes him the third highest-paid receiver in the
league.
As noted by recently by Scout.com, Carolina Panthers WR Steve Smith
is the highest-paid player at his position on an average per year basis at $10.9
million. The second highest-paid receiver in the league is Larry Fitzgerald
(Arizona Cardinals) at $10 million.
It's been widely speculated that White was looking for a deal that eclipsed the
three-year extension that Green Bay Packers WR Greg Jennings signed in
June. According to a league source, Jennings received $16.25 million guaranteed
($11.25 million signing bonus, $5 million base salary guaranteed for 2009.)
White set a franchise record with 1,382 receiving yards last season (fourth in
the NFL) en route to his first Pro Bowl nomination. He became the first Falcons
receiver to post back-to-back 1,000-yard campaigns since 1998 and '99 and the
first receiver in club history to tally back-to-back 1,200-yard seasons.
In 64 career games, White has caught 230 passes for 3,536 yards (15.4 avg.) and
16 touchdowns. In 2008, he led the League in third down receiving yardage (516)
and ranked tied for second in the NFL in third down receptions (29). The Falcons
were 5-1 last season when White finished a game with at least one touchdown
reception.
White was originally selected by the Falcons in the first round of the 2005
draft.
